Diving Medicals

Bellerive Health Hub offers comprehensive initial and annual diving medical assessments for recreational and occupational divers, conducted by Dr Graham Stevens.

Dr Stevens is a Staff Specialist in the Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital, with extensive experience in the assessment and management of diving-related medical conditions. He has been published in the SPUMS medical journal, Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) journal, Wilderness and Environmental Medical journal (USA) and Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance journal (USA)

Graham is a member of the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society (SPUMS), Canadian Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Association, the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) and holds both the Diploma of Diving Medicine (SPUMS) and the Advanced Diploma of Hyperbaric and Diving Medicine from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA).

All Diving Medical Certificates are issued in accordance with Australian Standard AS 4005.1 and AS/NZS 2299.1–3:2015 requirements.

Diving medical assessments generally take approximately one hour to one and a half hours to complete. Please note that attendance at an appointment does not guarantee certification of fitness to dive, as additional investigations or specialist assessments may be required.

What to Expect During Your Diving Medical

Medical History Review: Discussion of your health history, medications, and any pre-existing conditions.

Physical Examination: Comprehensive check including:

  • Measurement of height, weight, BMI, waist/hip circumference, blood pressure, and heart rate
  • Visual acuity (eye test)
  • Screening audiometry (hearing test)
  • Spirometry (lung function test)
  • ECG* if indicated or over 45 years of age
  • Cardiovascular disease risk blood test- *if required, you will be sent forms to complete these investigations at least 72 hours before your appointment.

Please bring along copies of any previous dive medicals. Please allow 1 – 1.5 hours for your Dive Medical
